Our Expertise

Our Stylists and Colourists are tiered according to their education, skills and capabilities. When selecting your preferred Stylist or Colourist, it is important to consider their level and whether they have the ability to provide you with your dream hair.

Emerging Stylist

Newly graduated from their Apprenticeship, our Emerging Stylists can cut basic styles that are shoulder length or longer and they can do beautiful blow waves. They do not yet have the confidence to cut shorter styles, fashion styles or curly hair and will be continuing to work on upskilling in these areas before they move to become Senior Stylists.

Senior Stylist

The ability to take basic hair cutting to the next level. Senior Stylists can cut short hair, fashion styles and curls. Their formal education has completed but they will continue to take part in speciality cutting education.

Director Stylist

Having completed further specialised cutting education, Director Stylists may become experts in certain areas of cutting. For example, they may become well known in the industry for cutting curls, or short hair. Some Director Stylists are simply all-rounders. Director stylists have had more experience in cutting every type of style and are generally quicker to complete a cut. Director stylists are seen as mentors in the salon and they enjoy educating Apprentices and Emerging Stylists.

Master Stylist

With an ability to forecast future trends, Master Stylists are ahead of the game, using innovative techniques to achieve a style. Often involved in industry events such as fashion shows and external education. Master Stylists are often booked out with a waiting list. Within the salon, Master Stylists take a lead role and contribute to the strategy of the salon.

Creative Director Stylist

These Stylists are at a level where they are experts in their field, teaching internationally, mentors in the industry and are very sought after with long waiting lists in the salon. Ed is our resident Creative Director Stylist.

Emerging Colourist

A hairdresser will often become an Emerging Colourist before they become an Emerging Stylist. During their Apprenticeship, emerging hairdressers will be doing colour work in the salon, long before they are doing haircuts. With a lot of colour work experience, they are ready to become an Emerging Colourist when they can complete root retouches, global colours, multi-coloured toners, basic foiling and colour combos (foiling along with a root colour), and while they are still perfecting the art of Balayage. An Emerging Colourist will not yet have the confidence to complete colour corrections or complex colour services. They will be continuing to work on upskilling in these areas before they move to become Senior Colourists. Emerging Colourists continue to complete a lot of work alongside other more senior Stylists.

Senior Colourist

No longer completing colour work for other more senior Stylists, Senior Colourists will have learnt more creative colour techniques such as highlighting/lowlighting, balayage, foiliage and colour correction work. Their formal education will have been completed and they will move on to more specialised education in the future.

Master Colourist

With excellent colour knowledge and experience, Master Colourists are able to take technical and placement techniques to a creative level. They will be proficient in all modern colour menu services and be able to use these to achieve expert results. Master Colourists will have completed external specialised training courses and become certified colourists aligned to particular colour product brands. Within the salon, Master Colourists take a lead role and contribute to the strategy of the salon.

Toner Refresh

A toner refresh service is intended to be a service that takes place in-between your bigger, lightening services. They are recommended every 5-6 weeks to keep your colour looking fresh and glossy, and keep out unwanted undertones of colour (in particular, warmer golden shades). A toner refresh service does not involve bleach. The total amount of time in the salon will be between 1-1.5hrs.

If you are booking via our online booking system: A maintenance toner should be booked and should be followed by either a complimentary blow wave or a haircut.

A bit more about toners:

Why toning is important? Lightening hair with bleach gives results that are individual and specific to each guest. Obtaining the intended colour and vibrancy of lightened hair, can only be achieved with the customised use of a toning product. As well as removing brassiness or yellowing from hair, toning the hair improves the overall appearance and shine of the hair.

When are toners used? Toners can be applied directly after a lightening service, or as a maintenance service on their own between lightening services. Maintenance toner services are highly recommended every 4-6 weeks to keep your colour looking in top condition.

What brand of toner is used at Oscar&Co? We use Redken Shades Eq toners which are world class and truly sought after toning products that come in a very large range of shades. Toners are typically applied to damp hair either at the basin, or back at your chair. They are left on for a specified period to develop before being rinsed and conditioned.

How do I look after my toner at home? Toners are not a permanent colour. They are intended to wash out after a period of time. The health and condition of your hair plays a big part in how long the toner will last. To ensure the longevity of your toner colour, it is important to use homecare prescribed by your Colourist, look after your hair when exposed to environmental or lifestyle activities and avoid over-washing your hair.

Are toners a ‘one-size-fits-all’? Historically when toning the hair, one shade of toner was applied all-over the hair which can result in a more flat look to the hair. More recently, toning practices have moved to more creative, multi-coloured techniques which give the hair movement and dimension. Toning has become one of the most important parts of a colouring service and contributes to the increased luxury and quality of hair colouring services over time. Based on your preferred colour or inspiration photos, your Colourist may offer a range of different toning options (refer to the photo carousel to the right):

  1. All-over toner: A single toner colour is applied all over the hair. This is used for more all-over toner colours or on short hair.
  2. Multi-dimensional toner: Multiple shades of toner are used to achieve a multi-dimensional colour with movement and dimension. The most common use is to create a root shadow: A darker shade of toner is applied at the roots to create a shadow effect. It is blended down the hair and naturally blends into ends that are toned with a lighter shade of toner. This gives the hair a natural sun-kissed appearance. A root shadow can be short or long depending on your needs.
  3. Double/filler toner: Used when taking hair from light to darker colours. The initial toning helps to ‘fill’ the lighter hair to bring back the underlying pigment that was removed in the lightening process. It will prevent the dark colour from looking dull.

How should my toner be booked online:

  1. If you are having a toner with another colour service such as foils, hair painting or bleach: Unless previously discussed with your Colourist, a toner with other service should be booked in after every lightening service. A complimentary blow wave or hair cut should be booked after the toner service.
  2. If you are having a maintenance toner to refresh your colour without bleach application: A maintenance toner should be booked and should be followed by either a complimentary blow wave or a haircut.

T-Section

A T-section is a colouring technique where only the top section and hairline of the hair is coloured. Focusing primarily on the most visible parts of the hair, the “T” shape is formed by the hairline across the front/sides of the head, and the parting from the forehead to the crown. The parting might be in the middle, or to the side, depending on how you part your hair. A T-section is a popular choice for touch-ups and grey coverage. It is a time-saving and cost-effective way to refresh hair colour, adding dimension and brightness where it’s most noticeable.

T-sections are usually required every 4-6 weeks and can be interchanged with a full root retouch every second visit to the salon.

A T-section can be booked online. It should be followed by either a complimentary blow wave or a haircut.

For a more cost effective option, T-Sections can be booked directly with one of our Emerging Colourists. You can split the services so the Emerging Colourist completes the T-Section and your preferred Stylist completes your haircut.

Unless your Colourist has advised otherwise, please allow 1-1.5 hrs in the salon including processing time.

Root Retouch

A root retouch is a colouring technique that targets only the roots or regrowth area of the hair, typically 2-5cms from the scalp. A root retouch is normally done to cover grey hair, or refresh the base colour to match the rest of the hair. This creates a uniform colour at the roots and ensures there are no visible lines of regrowth. There is no lightening products used in a root retouch.

This service is usually required every 4-6 weeks depending on the rate of growth of your hair.

A root retouch can be booked online. It should be followed by either a complimentary blow wave or a haircut.

For a more cost effective option, root retouches can be booked directly with one of our Emerging Colourists. You can split the services so the Emerging Colourist completes the root retouch and your preferred Stylist completes your haircut.

Unless your Colourist has advised otherwise, please allow 2-2.5hrs in the salon including processing time.

Global Colour

A global colour is a colouring technique that involves colouring the entire head of hair, from roots to tips. This service will cover over any existing colour. It can change the overall colour of the hair or refresh the entire head of hair to achieve a new look. For example, if you are wanting to become a darker shade, or move from blonde to copper or brunette.

If you are moving from blonde to a darker colour, you may need a toner filler service before your global colour can be applied. It’s best to book a complimentary consultation prior to your service so we can allow enough time and quote accurately.

A standard global colour can be booked on it’s own and should be followed by either a complimentary blow wave or a haircut.

For a more cost effective option, global colours can be booked directly with one of our Emerging Colourists. You can split the services so the Emerging Colourist completes the global colour and your preferred Stylist completes your haircut.

Unless your Colourist has advised otherwise, please allow 2-2.5hrs in the salon including processing time.

Foils / Foiliage

Hair foiling is a technique used to create highlights (lighter strands of hair) or lowlights (darker strands of hair). It is used when you want multi-dimensional hair colour with natural looking results. It involves sectioning the hair and applying colour or lightener to specific strands. These sections are then wrapped in foil to separate them from the rest of the hair. The foil helps to keep the colour or lightener in place, prevents it from bleeding onto other sections of hair, and allows for precise application. If you have had your hair lightened previously, any applied lightener will focus on previously unlightened hair so as not to damage already lightened hair.

While classic foils are placed right at the root of the hair, foiling can be used to create a balayage effect (darker root and lighter at the ends). When foils are used in the application of a balayage effect, it is called foiliage. There is a small surcharge for this technique as it is a more involved service.

Speak to your Colourist if you would like any face framing lightness (also called a money piece) as this will determine how your Colourist positions the foils to get precisely the look you are wanting to achieve. Inspiration photos are key!

A toner is always recommended with a foiling service. The toner will give you your preferred shade following lightening. It can also be used to create transitional blends from roots to tips. Refer to our toner services for more information and options.

There are different amounts of foiling you can get depending on what you want to achieve. If you are wanting just small amounts of colour or lightness across the top of your head, you will have a partial foiling service. This cannot be booked online. If you are wanting more colour or lightness across the top, front and sides of the head, you will have a half head foiling service. If you are wanting a lot of colour or lightness across your entire head, you will have a full head foiling service. It is best to come to the salon for a complimentary consultation if you are unsure what you are needing. Your Colourist will then be able to allow enough time when booking your service and provide you with an accurate quote.

When booking online: If you have never been to the salon before, you should include a complimentary consultation service at the beginning of your appointment. Select the foiling service (based on the amount of foils you want). When booking, always include a toner with other service, followed by either a complimentary blow wave or a haircut. **Please include a note when booking if you have never lightened your hair before, or if you have very long regrowth. This allows us to book extra time for the additional work required.

Unless your Colourist has advised otherwise, please allow 3-3.5 hrs in the salon including processing time.

Hair Painting / Balayage

Hair painting or balayage is a hair colouring technique that involves painting or sweeping colour or lightener onto the hair in a freehand manner. Typically the colour or lightener is applied more heavily to the mid-lengths and ends of the hair rather than the roots, unlike traditional highlighting techniques that use foils. This method allows for a more natural and blended transition between colours, creating a sun-kissed, warm-toned, natural look.

A balayage is often considered to be a low maintenance colour. The roots are often left darker, which not only gives a more natural appearance but also reduces the need for frequent touch-ups as the hair grows out.

Speak to your Colourist if you would like any face framing lightness (also called a money piece) as this will determine how your Colourist positions the foils to get precisely the look you are wanting to achieve. Inspiration photos are key!

A toner is always recommended with a hair painting/balayage service. The toner will give you your preferred shade following lightening. It can also be used to create transitional blends from roots to tips. Refer to our toner services for options.

There are different amounts of hair painting you can get depending on what you want to achieve. If you are wanting just small amounts of colour or lightness across the ends of your hair, you will have a partial hair painting service. If you are wanting more colour or lightness in the mid-lengths and ends of your hair, you will have a half head hair painting service. If you are wanting a lot of colour or lightness in the mid-lengths and ends of your hair, or have a lot of hair, you will have a full head hair painting service. It is best to come to the salon for a complimentary consultation if you are unsure what you are needing. Your Colourist will then be able to allow the right amount of time for your service and be able to quote you accruately.

How to book online: If you have never been to the salon before, include a complimentary consultation service at the beginning of your appointment. Select your balayage service (based on the amount of lightening you want).

Bleach

Also called on-scalp bleach services. Bleaching is a hair lightening process where the lightener is applied directly to the scalp as well as the lengths and ends of the hair. It is used to lighten the hair from the roots to the tips, creating a uniform colour. It is commonly used for achieving a platinum blonde look or as a base for vivid or pastel fashion colours. Since it involves applying bleach to the sensitive scalp area, it requires high quality products as well as careful application and monitoring to prevent irritation or damage to the scalp and hair. Proper aftercare, including conditioning treatments, are essential to maintain the health of the hair following an on-scalp bleach service.

We offer an all-over global bleach service for those that are wanting their entire head of hair bleached. We also offer a bleach retouch service whereby bleach is only applied to the regrowth, avoiding any previously bleached areas so as to ensure the integrity of your hair. An alternative to a global bleach is a scalp foils or platinum card service. This involves using foils to paint the lightener across the entire head of hair. This is a time consuming service but it can result in a lighter shade of blonde as the foils help retain heat from the head which amplifies the lightening process.

Refer to our Colour Transformation services if you are wanting to apply fashion colours (vivids, pastels or multi-colour blends) over bleached hair.

When booking online: A bleach retouch should be followed by a toner with other service as well as a complimentary blow wave or a haircut. Unless you have been to us before for the same service, global bleach, scalp-foils/platinum card, and fashion colour services cannot be booked online as they require a consultation prior to the appointment. During the complimentary consultation, your Colourist will be able to book your service for the required amount of time and be able to quote accurately.

Unless your Colourist has advised otherwise, please allow 3-3.5 hrs in the salon for a bleach re-touch including processing time.

Fashion Colours

Fashion colours include pastel and vivid (or bright) colours which are usually applied over very blonde, or pre-lightened hair. Fashion colours could be an all-over single colour, or multiple colours through the hair in sections, or blended depending on your inspiration.

We use Evo Staino direct dyes when creating fashion colours.

Fashion colour services cannot be booked online as they require a complimentary consultation prior to the appointment. During the consultation, your Colourist will be able to book your service for the required amount of time and be able to quote accurately.

Grey Transformations

There is a growing trend to embrace natural grey hair. We think grey can still be considered natural if it is given an extra bit of brightness and gloss as well! There are different ways to transition to grey hair. Some take the natural route and put up with any bands from previously coloured hair. We now offer a grey transformation service which allows you to transition to grey in one day. Have a read of our 3-part blog series on our grey transformation journey which gives you more information about this service.

Note that this service is a full day service and will require more than one Stylist. It has been priced accordingly, however we think the reduced maintenance in the long-term will be worth it.

The grey transformation service cannot be booked online as it requires a complimentary consultation prior to the appointment. During the consultation, your Colourist will be able to book your service for the required amount of time and be able to quote accurately.
